Introduction to Langland Bay Lifeguard Club
Established in 1975 by our founder and Life President Alan Lloyd MBE, the Club has grown from a small gathering on the beach at Langland to what you see today.
Run entirely by its members, who are all volunteers and receive no payment for the work they do, the Club’s primary purpose is to provide aquatic based lifesaving and first aid training to its members across a range of ages from 7yrs to 60+. In addition, the Club provides opportunities for members to compete against other Surf Lifesaving Clubs in order to hone their skills, build on their fitness levels, and have fun!
Our Club is divided into 4 sections – Nippers, Juniors, Seniors and Masters. Club activities take place at Langland Bay in the summer months (from the start of May to end of September) and at a local swimming pool during winter months (September to end of April).
Nippers (£13.50 per month)
Aimed at 7-12 year olds, the Nipper section of the Club exists to provide children with the fundamental skills and knowledge of how to stay safe in or around the water, as well as teaching basic rescue skills so they can help others. Our Nipper sessions are designed to build on existing swimming skills, therefore it is essential that all prospective members have a good level of swimming ability relative to their age. As a guide, all Nippers, regardless of age, must be able to swim at least 50m front crawl without stopping in a swimming pool environment. All prospective members will be swim tested in order to determine the most suitable session based on their ability.
In addition to training, the Nipper section also takes part in various sporting competitions across Wales, both in the pool and on the beach. Surf Lifesaving competitions are all about having fun and are a great way to put skills learnt in training to the test against others. It is expected that all members compete and represent the Club in at least one pool and one beach event each year.
Juniors (12 to 16yrs) - £16 per month
The Junior section builds on the fundamental skills learnt during Nippers. Junior members train for intermediate level First Aid & Lifesaving Awards, providing them with a solid foundation to progress towards the National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NVBLQ). This is an internationally recognised qualification which is also the pre-requisite for employment as a beach lifeguard across the UK.
Seniors & Masters - £16 per month
There are various awards and training opportunities available to Seniors & Masters, including the NVBLQ, Rescue Boat Crew & Helm training and other specialist first aid/lifesaving qualifications.
Note that there is also a family membership package which is capped at £40/month
